Ramon was born in 1982 in Jalisco, Mexico and came to Seattle with his parents in 1993. He attended Denny Middle School and West Seattle High School. The first one in his family to complete high school, Ramon finished a Pre Med course at Seattle University while working at a Rainier Valley grocery. However, medical school seemed financially impossible.
Through the internet, Ramon learned about the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana, Cuba, where thousands of young people from around the world receive a completely free medical education. Part of the agreement with ELAM is that, after graduation, students return to their homelands to provide medical care to their underserved communities. He applied through the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization that recruits for ELAM in the United States. He was accepted by IFCO and then he was offered a position by ELAM.
