April 2008

I love the spring season.  The trees get a chance to grow and display new leaves; flowers, with a variety of hereditary traits, bloom in every corner and release a fragrance that permeates the air; and new birds arrive and bring along new songs.  Students at ELAM, on the other hand, are tired but excited to start a new trimester, the last trimester of this school year.

The second trimester culminated with a practical exam on the 4th of April and a theoretical exam on the 8th of April.  The past trimester we focused on the nervous system and this trimester we will be introduced to the endocrine and reproductive systems among other topics.

I must say that I am very impressed with most of my professors here at the Latin American School of Medicine.  They are kind, humble and they love to teach.  This past week, for example, I was in class with one of my biochemistry professors and I asked him a question.  He answered my question thoroughly and a few hours later he saw me in the hallway and started a conversation with me.  He remembered my question and just wanted to share more information with me regarding my previous question.  These types of experiences are common at ELAM.  When you walk the halls you find professors hanging out with the students discussing lectures or answering questions.  Oftentimes, they are just hanging out having a good time.

Next month, I will do my utmost to introduce you to some of the professors that make the Latin American School of Medicine an excellent school.  Little attention is often given to them, yet without them, this program would not exist.  Without my professors, I would not be here making my dream a reality.

Ps. I wanted to let you know that I have a new roommate.  Her name is Carla, and she is a turtle.  My roommates and I are very excited because she keeps us company when we study and she listens to us when we are stressed out.  She is definitely a great addition to our room.
